Supreme Court dismisses Wike's non-jurisdiction challenge!

The Supreme Court has dismissed the suit filed by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, challenging the jurisdiction of the Rivers governorship election petition tribunal to hear a petition by candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dakuku Peterside.

In his statement, Wike had argued that the tribunal sitting in Abuja had no jurisdiction over matters that transpired in the state, contending that the tribunal should have sat in Rivers State and not Abuja therby breaching section 285 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

However, the tribunal was moved to Abuja on the orders of the Chief Judge of the Appeal Court citing security concerns as reason for the decision ,as well as tribunals covering Akwa I‎bom, Yobe, Adamawa and Borno states.
The appeal court had earlier ruled that the tribunal could sit in Abuja to handle Rivers election petitions.

Following the ruling passed on the Rivers State governorship election on Saturday, the political temperature in the state has since risen a few bars as the ruling APC and the opposition PDP have been engaged in a war of words over the credibility of the judicial ruling.

The court also affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which had earlier okayed the decision of the Tribunal to assume jurisdiction.

The apex court likened the violence in Rivers to that of a theatre of war such as is prevailing in the North-East”, the party said in a statement sgned by its Publicity Secretary, Chris Finebone in Port Harcourt today.

National Leadership of the PDP, in a strong-worded statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Saturday, however asked:

PDP supporters and lovers of democracy across the country to rise up and use all lawful means to resist anti-democratic forces, now using the judiciary and security agencies in their desperate scheme to subvert the will of the people and destroy the nation’s democracy.

The APC in its assessment after today's judgement was grateful that all seven eminent jurists of the Supreme Court unanimously agreed that there was sufficient violence before; during and after the elections to justify the relocation of the tribunal to Abuja and that the relocation of the tribunal to Abuja was to safeguard the lives of the tribunal chairman, members and witnesses.

The APC noted with delight that Justice Okoro from Akwa Ibom State not only concurred but went further to say that Rivers State was a theatre of war and as such protection of life and limbs of members of the panel and interested parties was paramount and thus relocation of the Panel imperative.

The APC also commended the eminent Supreme Court Justices for once again re-affirming that they always dispense justice without fear or favour despite the frequent boasts by Nyesom Wike that he has all the Justices of the Supreme Court in his pocket, whatever that means.
The significance of all seven eminent Justices of the Supreme Court speaking in one voice in today’s judgment according to the APC, is that the faith, hope and confidence of the ordinary Nigerian to get justice is assured in the Nigerian judicial system.

Lagos Govt. Calls for calm as DSS arrests 45 Boko Haram Suspects!

The Lagos State Government through its Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, has urged citizens in the state to remain calm and very security conscious as the Police and other security agencies have intensified efforts to rid the state of hoodlums, armed robbers and suspected terrorists.

Speaking of the background of the arrest by the Department of State Services of 45 suspected Boko Haram members who allegedly planned to attack Dolphin Estate in Ikoyi, the State government expressed confidence in the combined efforts of DSS, Police and other security agencies to keep the state free of terror attacks and stamp out robberies and violent crimes.

In a statement signed by the the state government vowed not to relent in its constitutional duty to ensure safety of lives and property throughout the length and breadth of the state.

Ayorinde said the current reality is that times have changed and the need to urge every citizen to be more security conscious is now paramount.

Due to the economic hardship being experienced all over the country with many states and private business owners battling with payments of salaries and wages, Lagos State has become the prime destination for several thousands of people who now throng the daily with no plan to return, because they believe this is the state where economic succor is available.

Meanwhile, the DSS has charged the 45 suspects arrested at Dolphin Estate to a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court sitting in Isolo on Friday and the court ordered they be remanded  at the Kirikiri prisons in the state.

The DSS said the suspects were arrested following intelligence report on their alleged plan to attack the estate, which is in a high brow area in the state. The security operatives told the court that the suspects had volunteered confessional statements, adding that arms were recovered from them.

The DSS urged the court to remand the suspects in prison pending further investigations. The magistrate, who asked that his name should not be disclosed for security reasons, granted the prayers that the suspects be remanded in prison.

According to the charge filed before the court, the names of the suspects include Abuyi Sheriff, Babagana Ali, Abass Ibrahim, Abubaka Grema, Kabiri Ibrahim, Mustaph Mohammed, Usman Mohammed, Modu Amsami, Isa Agafi, Adamu Jebili and Saja Kamba.

Also among them were: Abba Sagoma, Mallam Buchu, Abdul-Kareem Abba, Babagana Koloye, Usman Buka, Adamu Mohammed, Lawal Mohammed, Tela Abana, Mustapha Mohammed, Isa Agafi, Belo Modu, Kachala Babagana, Modu Abu and Alhaji Modu Mustapha.

An affidavit presented in court disclosed how a team of the DSS cordoned off the area, intercepted the suspects and carried out the arrests.

Also, a Joint Task Force team comprising the personnel of the police, Department of State Services, the military and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has been combing the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and other towns for Boko Haram suspects and their sponsors.

As part of the operation to apprehend fleeing terror suspects, the Task Force last Wednesday, raided a black spot at Nyanya, a satellite town in the FCT, where it arrested about 30 suspects.

Nyanya and Kuje, FCT recorded twin bomb blasts on October 2, 2015, in which about 20 people lost their lives and many others were injured.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, said that the IG had set up a special intelligence team tasked with getting intelligence and information on terror plots in the country.

It was learnt that the intelligence team successfully arrested the masterminds of the Nyanya and Kuje bombings, five of whom were picked up at different parts of the FCT in Iddo village and Karamajiji, along Airport Road, and Gaulaka area in Suleja, Niger State.

The suspects—Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu, Mohammed Jimoh, Abdulwaheed Nasiru and Abdullahi Nasiru were arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja last Thursday on five-count charges bordering on terrorism, conspiracy, accessory to acts of terrorism and act preparatory to an act of terrorism.

Ross says he'll show the world that the hatchet is buried when he drops "Self Made Vol. 4" -- a collaborative album featuring the entire MMG roster.

No word on when it's gonna drop -- but at this point, the sooner the better ... and we can't wait to hear what they're gonna say.

Meek Mill had slammed Wale, calling him broke and a hoe for siding Drake during an interview on the Breakfast Club. When asked to weigh in on the beef, Wale who many feel didn’t diss Meek said

You now need BVN to buy foreign currencies - CBN

Bureaux De Change operators (BDCs) in Nigeria  has been directed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to demand for customers'  bank verification number (BVN) for all forex transactions from November 1, 2015.

This is done in continuation of efforts to stabilise the forex market, stem the rampant cases of forex leakages and illicit money transfers from Nigeria.

The central bank gave the directive in a circular posted on its website on Wednesday. The circular was signed by the Director, Financial Policy and Regulation, CBN, Kevin Amogu. The banking sector regulator also stated that from November 1, 2015, it would discontinue the sale of forex to the BDCs that had not availed it the BVNs of all its directors.

It explained: " All banks and licenced BDCs operating in Nigeria as well as the general public are, therefore put on notice that with effect from November 1, 2015, all customers desiring to purchase forex through all available channels in Nigeria must provide their BVN, which shall be validated by the CBN authorised forex dealer through the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System platform before the transactions are consummated.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN shall from November 1, 2015, discontinue sale of forex to the BDCs that had not availed it the BVN of all its directors. Any authorised forex dealer that fails to provide the required information in its returns or provides a wrong BVN would be penalised and this may include the termination of the forex dealership authorisation."

The BVN, project which was launched in February 2014 is being sponsored by the bankers’ committee. The deadline for enrolment of bank customers is October 31. The BVN was among other things, introduced to address safety of customers’ funds, avoid losses through compromise of personal identification numbers and other criminal activities in the industry

The Fashola Speech that left our Senators dazed!

Pictures don't lie they say . These photos say it all. Our senators looked dazed during his over one hour session.

Fashola who has been confirmed minister became the number one trending topic in Nigeria, was trending in the UK and USA as well.

The former governor of Lagos state appeared before the Senators from 11. 48am to 1pm on Tuesday and he told the Senators of the need to review the Abuja Master Plan which has been distorted, just as he said that it has become imperative to decentralize the Nigerian Police as he advocated the establishment of a state policing system if the nation’s insecurity problem must be addressed.

Fashola who defended allegations concerning a N78 million website and N258 million borehole, said that throughout his stay as governor for eight years, nobody has so far come out to accuse him of enriching himself corruptly, even as he said that he did not personally sign any cheque as well as his commissioners. He also apologised to Nigerians for deporting some citizens of the state, particularly from the South-East to their states of origin.

He said: “The number available to me is that we have probably a standing Police force of about 500,000, les than a million in every event to a population that is heading to 180 million. So, we are under-policed and if the Federal Government decide to take up these responsibilities on its own, can it do so in the micro level that is necessary at the state and local government levels?

“My recommendation is a compelling urgency for decentralization. I have made those recommendations to some of the committees on constitution amendment where I was privileged to make presentations. There have been arguments about why we should not go there but those argument did not go far. They did not address the fundamental responsibilities that government has. I have heard the argument that government will abuse the Police for political purposes.

“The abuse of political power is not as important as loss of lives, and everything we do to advance that cause makes us more respected as government that cares. There is a process for curing abuse of institution but there is no process known to me today for recovering lives already lost. These are challenges that are before us as a people and as a nation. At the state level, you can also wonder what governors are going through.

“They have parliaments that make laws but they have no capacity to enforce their own laws. We are talking about domestic issues — rape and domestic violence — there are criminal offences in many states across the country but who is prosecuting them? This is because the Police officer is too busy chasing a robbery. Our mothers, daughters and sisters are expected to tolerate rape. If we are afraid of abuse, one of the things I will suggest is that we start a state Police.

“I proposed a system where we have six zonal commands from existing the Police force. It is not every state that can start if it cannot fund it. States who can fund can decide to employ 1,000 men, the Police Service Commission will train and graduate and if at the end of the training, only 800 pass the exam, they would be employed. The state buys their uniforms, there is a national license.”

On security, Fashola said, “ As far as security is concerned, that is the primary purpose of every government. It is the purpose for which government exists, to protect the citizens and their assets and it is the toughest job that any government can have. It is the challenge that leaders across the world are facing — terrorism, youthful gangs, cults and so on.

“My attitude was to see criminals as my competitors and in a competition, my desire was to use my resources to outspend my competitors, out-think the competition and out-maneouvre the competition. But our risks are different. As a governor, my job was to ensure that nobody died, my job was to ensure that nobody robs. So, I have no magic for error. Every citizen that was robbed, I have failed that citizen. So, I have to be right every time, the criminal has to be right only once.

“So, we brought all the stakeholders — from the banks who were being robbed everyday then without the capacity to respond and one of the things I told one of the bankers was that if he could protect and bullet-proof his banks, if he cared about his workers and customers, can the government bullet-proof every home? If you bring some of this money and we put it in a pool and give these Policemen, it will help us and so, the point here is that there is a necessity here to decentralize.

Speaking on Abuja, the nominee said, “ In deciding what to do about Abuja, these are the real issue. First, getting a hold of its resources, knowing its districts and its problems, knowing the people, sharing with them what the thoughts are. The Master Plan itself may perhaps need to be reviewed. Plans are not static documents, they must be reviewed periodically. A level of consultation and knowledge would be necessary in order to accurately say this is where Abuja should be heading. In spite of our complaints, it is still a beautiful city, getting it to be better than it is, is a matter of choice for all of us. Laws have to be enforced and it should be rigorously followed.”

On old and young politician and how they relate to economic development, he said, “The sum total of every nation is its people. The more elderly ones are the more matured ones. No matter how hard we try, we will never discount the experience, the maturity, counselling and guiding support of people who are older than us. We must continue to interface with them. I must walk away from the tendency to condemn the level of our national development. We must begin to see our cup as half full rather than half empty.”

On the alleged website project, Fashola said: “Let me say first that it raises the question of public understanding of the role governors, public servants and some have a surprise to learn that as a governor of Lagos State, I didn’t sign cheques, none of my commissioners signed cheques. I didn’t fix contract prices. It is an institutional process.

“The only training I have is that of a lawyer. Nobody can award contract over benchmark price. Throughout my tenure, I have been confronted with the price of things and the reality is that when you design a road, what you meet in reality when construction starts is usually not what you end up with. In all of these, nobody has alleged that I have corruptly enriched myself. I could not have been a master in computer and technology. I need something to do my work.”

When asked about his definition of loyalty, Fashola who noted that he remained loyal to causes he believed in said: “As for loyalty, the concept of loyalty is a strange one. The real answer to that question is, may your loyalty not be tested. I always pray that my loyalty will not be tested because you might have to take a bullet for somebody. We discuss it loosely, but in public service, I have remained loyal to causes that I have signed onto and in all my life, nobody can fairly accuse me of giving my word and going back on my word.”

Fashola calls for state police, apologises on deportation of Igbos

On deportation of Igbo people, he said: “In a federation, the right to free movement is not absolute, it carries with it a responsibility not to be a nuisance.” He said those moved to their states of origin were those who asked to be taken home. Fashola concluded his submission by saying he apologised in the interest of national cohesion.

GTBank partners with AFD to start financing SMEs!

Guaranty Trust Bank Plc (GTBank) said it has gone into partnership with Agence Française de Développement (AFD) to launch a N3 billion Ariz Portfolio Guarantee Scheme, an initiative designed to boost financing for business start-ups and development projects in Nigeria.

The partnership with GTBank, which according to a statement from the bank was the first in Anglophone Africa, would support the growth of SMEs by providing a risk sharing mechanism on loan advances.

The Ariz Portfolio Guarantee Scheme provides banks, private equity investors and other financial institutions a safer platform to increase participation in SME financing by providing foreign guarantees to local credit facilities advanced to SMEs. Since its inception in 2008, the Ariz Portfolio Guarantee Scheme has expanded to over 20 francophone countries in Africa, and has teamed up with more than 40 partner banks worldwide. The scheme has seen a steady rise in the number and volume of guarantees allocated (up 80% annually over the past 3 years) and an increasing number of companies have been able to develop each year, with thousands of jobs created.

According to the French Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Denys Gauer, “small and medium enterprises  have a key role as drivers of economic growth and employment. However, despite the widespread presence of SMEs in Nigeria, the sector faces major obstacles such as the limited access to bank financing, mostly because of the risk factor associated with SMEs. The objective of this scheme is to facilitate SMEs’ access to finance by supporting the development of the GTBank portfolio of SME loans.”

Also, speaking at the launch of the event, the Managing Director/CEO of GTBank,Mr. Segun Agbaje, said: “Empowering small and medium scale enterprises remains pivotal to the sustenance of growth and development in emerging economies across the world. This sector remains crucial to the economic make-up of Nigeria yet contributes little to our national GDP. We are determined to help rewrite this narrative by boosting access to long term financing for the sector.”

He further stated that, “The partnership with AFD is the first for any Anglophone speaking country and reaffirms the Bank’s commitment to building a strong SME sector buoyed by easy access to long term financing.  As a Bank, we will continue to provide solutions to help smaller businesses build capacity and improve their knowledge of managing businesses. Earlier in the year, using our SME MarketHub platform, we organised a training program for small business owners on capacity building, business ethics and global best practices."

Adenuga's in-law, Taju Disu killed in land tussle!

The Managing Director of Lekki Worldwide Investment Company, Mr. Tajudeen Disu, who was the brain behind the Lekki Free Trade Zone initiative, was monday morning killed in Lagos during a community uprising.

Disu was the father of Jameel Disu who is married to Bella, the second daughter of business mogul and Chairman of Globacom, Mr. Mike Adenuga.
It was alleged that a fracas began in the morning when members of the Okunraye community in the Ibeju Lekki area of the state sighted some members of staff of Dangote refinery at the site.
The villagers said they were on a peaceful protest against "forceful takeover" of their land by the Lagos state government on behalf of Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko  Dangote and the Lekki Free Zone Ltd.

During the confrontation, the deceased tried to calm frayed nerves when some hoodlums allegedly hijacked the otherwise peaceful protest and unleashed mayhem in the process.

According to another report, the deceased had called in the police to restore peace, but the policemen allegedly shot at the crowd and killed two people.

After regrouping, the community again angrily stormed the area and it was in the process that some persons killed Disu and severely injured the refinery’s Chief Security Officer, Colonel Usman.

The police were able to restore peace and they also arrested 20 persons in connection with the incident including the Baale (chief) of the community.”

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, monday ordered the police to fish out the perpetrators behind the murder of Disu.

While expressing shock and sadness over his death, Ambode said the late Disu was shot by assailants during an official visit to one of the villages within the zone in the early hours of yesterday.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, the governor said: “We are deeply touched over the loss of our dedicated officer at the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Alhaji Tajudeen Disu, who was until his death the arrow head of the free trade zone Initiative.

“It really saddens my heart and the heart of all of us because this was somebody that had been dedicated to his duty in the past 10 years. He was a man who was committed to promoting the inflow of investment to Lagos State.

“This is a great concern and I have directed the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to investigate the cause of the death. The Commissioner of Police must do a thorough investigation to unravel the root cause of what has just happened because he was on a peaceful mission to that place.”

He urged residents of the area to remain calm, as his administration would continue to ensure that the security of lives and property is accorded necessary priority and that the zone is safe for investors.

He said: “I want to appeal to all our people in Ibeju Lekki axis that they should give peace a chance; it is in the interest of all Lagosians that we attract as many investors to the state.

“That is what we have been doing and have improved upon in the last four months. I implore everybody to be calm. We would get to the root of this unfortunate incident.

“I will like everybody to also know that we are trying our best but we can only appeal to our people to allow peace to reign in the free trade zone.

“That is the only way we can allow more people to be involved in this trade zone. Let me tell our people that we are on the right track for the kind of job creation we want to bring to Lagos State.”

APC behind Alamieyesiegha’s death - Group

A socio-cultural organisation in the Diaspora, Izon Brotherhood, has laid the blame of Chief Dieprieye Alamieyesiegha’s death on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Arc. Pere Jones, the group’s spokesperson, made the accusation in a statement sent to the media from Germany, adding that the APC was behind the recent extradition notice for the former Bayelsa State governor sent by the UK, which aggravated his health condition.

"Clearly, it’s a shame to all our Ijaw brothers who are in league with the APC, witchhunting and working against their fellow Ijaw brothers ans sisters, being singled out for alleged corruption charges. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Frankly no Ijaw man worth his salt should have anything to do with APC. With what they have done to our dear leader, Alamieyesiegha, no right thinking son or daughter of Ijaw extraction should be seen associating with the APC. His death is really unfortunate."
